In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife, Lola Varney; sons Eugene Varney and Tommy Smith; four sisters; five brothers; one grandchild; two great grandchildren and two stepchildren, Bonnie Roby and Grat Keene. Garland was a retired coal miner, a member of the UMWA and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include wife Myrtle A.
